Step 1: Frame the Wall
Start by framing the entire wall with 2-inch wide MDF boards. Use the nail gun with 1 3/4 inch brad nails, or you can nail them in by hand. Locate studs whenever possible to nail the boards to.
Step 2: Plan the Layout Of Your DIY Accent Wall
Using an online tool, like this free board and batten calculator, calculate the spacing for your slats to ensure they’re evenly distributed across the wall.
Step 3: Install the Slats
Follow the planned layout to nail the slats onto the wall, alternating their position to create a layered effect. We used a 2″ overlap in the middle.
Step 4: Fill in the Holes
Use DAP Plastic Wood-X to fill in all nail holes. Once dry, lightly sand with 120 grit sandpaper.
Step 5: Seal the Seams
Apply DAP Extreme Stretch Caulk to fill in all the seams, ensuring a continuous look and flexibility to withstand material shifts over time.
Step 6: Sand and Paint
After sealing, lightly sand any excess material, then paint the wall in the color of your choice for a stunning finish. We put the boards up first then painted the wall. We realized after that it may be easier to paint the entire wall first, install your trim boards, then paint the boards. Either way will get you the result you want.
