Coat Closet Organization

Best Way To Organize Your Coat Closet

Winter is almost here.  For those that live in cooler climates, you’ll soon be grabbing your cold weather gear before heading out the door. Imagine searching for that one missing glove, or your favorite hat in the morning. It can make you feel stressed and worried you might be late for school or work. But guess what? If you organize your coat closet, it can make your mornings much easier! Let’s break down the best way I found to organize your coat closet, especially if you’re tight on space.

Organizing means putting things in the right place so we can find them easily. Having an organized coat closet will definitely help your mornings go smoother since you won’t have to spend a lot of time searching for your stuff.  Not only that, according to Shape Magazine, organization improves your overall mood and can reduce depression which helps to set you up for success for the day.

So, let’s make your coat closet a super organized place to make your mornings go smoother, and help you feel happier too.

Cheap Closet Organizer

Gloves, Hats, Mittens, Earmuffs

Here’s a simple, and cheap way to organize all of your gloves, hats, mittens, and earmuffs. Use an over-the-door shoe rack. Find one that has clear pockets, so you can see what’s inside each pocket. Seeing everything clearly makes it super easy to find what you need. And who doesn’t want things to be easier, especially on those mornings when you’re rushing to leave the house?

Here’s how to set it up: Use a washer and a screw through the grommets that are on the shoe rack. Attach the top of shoe rack to the back wall of your closet behind where your coats hang. Or, if you prefer, use the hooks that come with the rack to hang it over the back of your closet door.

Closetmaid storage systems

Scarves, Boots, Shoes

Next let’s talk about organizing your scarves, boots, and shoes. One way to do this is by putting up a closet system, like the one pictured here. This Closetmaid system not only makes your closet look nice, but gives you a space to hang your coats as well. You can customize this particular model to put the shelves in the middle and have hanging bars on each side. Or place the shelves to one side, then have one, or two, hanging bars on the opposite side.

The example here uses two hanging bars, and as a result of this, the closet went from one wire hanging bar measuring 48″ long to two metal hanging bars totaling 69″.  Hooray, more room for coats!

But if you don’t like the idea of shelves like these, no worries. You can use plastic bins that stack on top of each other to keep these items contained. They work great for keeping all your winter stuff organized.

Once you’ve organized everything, you’ll be happy you did it, especially because winter means this closet will be super busy. It might surprise you, but you can finish this project in just an afternoon! And while you’re sorting things out, it’s a good time to find any items you don’t wear anymore and donate them to someone who might need them.
