How To Make Suet Cakes For Birds
Birds will visit your backyard for two main reasons: to drink water and eat food. And, there are many benefits to attracting birds to your yard. A wild bird buffet is quite simple. They need seeds, fruits, fats, and insects for their diet. You can maintain a feeder in your yard to help the birds get their daily food supply. Making homemade suet cakes is a great way to offer variety and keep the birds coming back again and again.
Suet (pronounced ˈsuːɪt) are the fatty meat of animals and plants which is used as food either in its natural form or after melting. Let’s take a look at an easy recipe to make homemade suet cakes. So easy in fact you can get the kids involved and have some fun!
Ingredients
- 1 cup Lard
- 1 cup Crunchy Peanut Butter
- 2 cups Cornmeal
- 2 cups Oats
- 1 cup Raisins
- 1/2 cup Birdseed
First, melt the lard and peanut butter in a saucepan over medium heat until melted.
Next, take a bowl and combine cornmeal, oats, raisins, and birdseed. Pour in the melted lard / peanut butter mixture and mix it all together.
Finally, spread this mixture out into a cake pan and place it in the freezer for 2 hours.
Once the time is up, remove from the freezer and cut into 6 squares. Wrap them up individually in wax paper, or Zip lock bags. Store them in the fridge until ready to serve the birds.
That’s all there is to it! You can use beef fat in please of lard if you prefer. I make these frequently and place them in suet cake feeders. They attract many varieties of birds, especially the woodpeckers. You can also put in blueberries in place of the raisins, or mix in both. Offering different fruits and seeds will keep the birds coming back for more.
