Complete DIY Kitchen Remodel For Under $13K
Have you been thinking about renovating your kitchen? How about doing it ALL yourself? A DIY project like this will take a lot of time, but can save you a lot of money in labor. I recently decided to take on this type of project. It was by far the longest, and biggest DIY project I’ve done to date. Even though it was a little frustrating and exhausting at times, it was both fun and rewarding. Check out how I did my complete DIY kitchen remodel for under $13K.
Please note, I make no guarantees on the prices of the materials listed in this article. These were the prices I paid for them at the time I did this project, which was in the fall of 2022.
This is my kitchen before. As you can see here, my kitchen and living room were all one room. The kitchen really dated the house. No matter how modern I made my living room area, the kitchen would still scream the 90s. I really didn’t like the honey oak cabinets and brown tile.
Cabinets
I thought about painting the cabinets, but didn’t like the functionality of them. They were very small and narrow, so storage was a problem. I decided to replace them with RTA cabinets from Lily Ann Cabinets. They were so easy to put together and install. I spent a couple of afternoons assembling all 14 of the new cabinets by myself. I did have a friend help me install them as they were very large and heavy.
When purchasing new cabinet pulls, check out Amazon. You can get them so much cheaper than the big box stores.
Overall, I’m so happy with how the cabinets turned out and love being in my kitchen now.
Total Cost For Cabinets, Under Cabinet Lights, & Hardware: $8,359.24
Countertop
When wanting to save money on a kitchen remodel, butcher block was a no brainer. It’s not only affordable, but you can cut and install it yourself, again saving on labor costs. I found this beautiful Dark European Walnut from Home Depot. The color was gorgeous,so I didn’t even need to apply any stain to it.
Total Cost For Butcher Block Countertops & install materials: $2,782.91
Backsplash
You can really save some money on your kitchen remodel with your tile selection. There are so many choices and price points. I found a sheet of tiles that I loved for just under $7 a sheet. And, since I was able to use thinset I had leftover from a previous project, that saved me a few bucks too.
Total Cost For Tile Backsplash: $191.50
Flooring
I chose to pull up the tile that was in the kitchen so that I could extend the luxury vinyl plank flooring from the open living room in to the kitchen. It was a small area to cover since it was only the kitchen. I also purchased a bagster and paid for the service to come and haul the old tile away.
Total Cost For Flooring & Tile Disposal: $692.35
Kitchen Island Makeover
For the kitchen island, I left the old island intact and just refaced it with shiplap and painted it. I then added a new sink, faucet, and countertop.
Total Cost for Island Makeover, Faucet & Sink: $799.59
The entire cost was $12,825.59 for all materials and supplies. Not too bad considering I took the old kitchen all the way down to the drywall and subfloor. You can easily mix and match a few of these projects to give your kitchen a new look. Or, you can do a complete DIY kitchen remodel like I did here and save yourself thousands on labor.
