Low Cost Bathroom Remodel: Transform Your Half Bath on a Budget
When it comes to home improvements, a low cost bathroom remodel can have a significant impact without breaking the bank. I was faced with the challenge of updating a half bath on a tight budget, but with a little creativity and some strategic shopping, I was able to give this space a fresh, updated look while adding value to my home, and all for under $500. If you’re considering a bathroom remodel but donโt have a large budget, here are some affordable tips and tricks to help you achieve a stunning transformation.
Please note that the prices below were accurate at the time of this project in February 2022, and prices may vary. Be sure to do your research and shop around for the best deals in your area.
Planning Your Low Cost Bathroom Remodel
Before diving into a low cost bathroom remodel, itโs essential to start with a plan. Pinterest is an excellent resource for bathroom design inspiration, and itโs worth spending some time scrolling through ideas. Once youโve settled on a look, itโs time to start searching for the best prices on materials. Take your time during the planning and research phases of the projectโfinding good deals can take a few weeks, but the savings will be worth it.
Tile: Finding Affordable Bathroom Renovation Materials
For my bathroom remodel, I wanted a small honeycomb tile for the wall behind the sink. Originally, these tiles cost around $10-$12 per sheet, and I needed 42 sheets to cover a 9-foot wall. At those prices, my tile costs would have exceeded $400, which was out of the question for my budget. After continued searching, I found a perfect dupe for under $3 per sheet at Home Depot. These white hexagon tiles were a fraction of the cost of others Iโd seen.
In addition to the tiles, donโt forget about the thinset mortar, grout, and spacers. The thinsetโs color should match the grout you chooseโgray for dark grout, and white for light-colored grout.

Vanity: Refinishing Instead of Replacing for a Low Cost Bathroom Remodel
The vanity in this half bath was in great shape, so I decided to refinish it instead of buying a new one. I used Behrโs Cabinet & Trim Enamel in Semi-Gloss Very Navy. Refinishing cabinets is time-consuming, but itโs one of the most effective ways to achieve an affordable bathroom remodel. Donโt skip the prep steps like sanding and priming between coatsโthis ensures a smooth, professional finish. For a detailed guide, check out Step By Step How To Paint Cabinets.
If you already have paint brushes and/or a paint sprayer to use, then you won’t have to buy those materials.

Sink and Vanity Top: Refinishing to Save on Bathroom Renovation Costs
The original sink/vanity top was in perfect condition, so I chose to refinish it using Rust-oleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit. This two-part epoxy formula is designed for high moisture and heat environments. I was able to snag the product on Facebook Marketplace for only $38 shipped. If the stores near you are sold out, checking online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Craigslist could help you find a bargain.
They do suggest a certain type of brush or roller cover so I did have to buy those new.

Wall Paint, Fixtures, and Decor: More Ways to Keep Your Remodel Affordable
For painting, I found a gallon of satin finish paint in the “Oops Paint” section of Home Depot for just $9. These mis-tinted or returned paints are a great way to save big on your next project.
Amazon is another great resource for finding deals on bathroom fixtures and accessories. I found a set of brushed nickel cabinet handles for $14.41 and a faucet for $49.99, both in “Used – Very Good” condition. By filtering for “used” items, you can score high-quality products at a fraction of the cost. Additionally, be on the lookout for promo codes on Amazon and consider using Walmart’s price match policy to save even more.
To round out the space, I also found great deals on decor at discount stores like Marshallโs, TJMaxx, and Big Lots. Faux plants and a soap dish from these stores cost only $10 each.
Total for Wall Paint, Fixtures, and Decor = $205.32
